When a neighbor is facing eviction, a utility shutoff, or a car that won’t start, Essential Services is the front door. We provide immediate, practical assistance to individuals and families across Washtenaw County who are one crisis away from losing stability.
About the Program
The Essential Services Program provides immediate, practical support to individuals and families facing financial hardship in Washtenaw County. By addressing barriers to stability (housing, transportation, utilities, and household essentials) we help neighbors stay housed, keep their jobs, and maintain independence while building a stronger foundation for the future.
Assistance is available to residents of Washtenaw County experiencing a temporary financial hardship who have not received service from us in the last 12 months. Our staff will review your situation with you and connect you with the help you need.

What We Help With
Essential Services covers a range of urgent financial needs. Common assistance includes:
- Rent arrears and eviction prevention
- Utility shutoffs (electric, gas, water)
- Security deposits for housing
- Car repairs, insurance, and registration
- Medications and prescriptions
- Furniture for neighbors setting up a home
Availability of assistance depends on current funding. Our team will review your situation and let you know what options are available.
How to Apply
The process is straightforward. Start first by calling our support line during business hours. After connecting with a case manager all required documentation for your request will determined, and a follow-up appointment scheduled. Due to limited staff availability and workload, walk ins are not welcomed.
- Call or arrive for appointments: Reach us at (734) 484-4357, Monday-Thursday, 9:30 am to 2:30 pm.
- Review: A staff member will talk with you about your situation and what documentation is needed.
- Next steps: If you qualify, we will confirm your assistance and let you know what happens next.

Do you provide services outside of Washtenaw County?
Our services are restricted to residents of Washtenaw County and those who have not received service from us in the last 12 months.
Do you receive or donate appliances like washing machines or dryers, ovens?
We do not accept clothing or electronics. Instead, you can contact House By The Side of The Road (https://www.housebythesideoftheroad.org/ or 734-769-4085) for drop-off clothing donations and hours. Furniture donations must be of high quality and approved
What documentation is required to qualify for direct assistance?
For utilities: copy of official ID; current utility bill (must be shut off status); 30 days proof of income for all occupants of the household; and SER decision notice from Health & Human Services.
For Car repair: copy of valid driver’s license; current vehicle registration; proof of valid car insurance; 30 days proof of income for all household occupants; and estimate for vehicle repair from a licensed mechanic.
For Car insurance: copy of valid driver’s license; current vehicle registration; 30 days proof of income for all occupants of the household; and the insurance payment amount - (NOT for new policy down payments).
For Car registration: copy of valid driver’s license; proof of valid car insurance; 30 days proof of income for all household occupants; and price of license renewal tab.
For Housing/Eviction Prevention: copy of official ID; 30 days proof of income for all occupants of the household; SER decision notice from Health & Human Services; current rental ledger (a detailed record of rent payments); and all eviction paperwork received.
For Housing Security deposit: copy of official ID; 30 days proof of income for all occupants of the household; SER decision notice from Health & Human Services; and move in letter with the total amount needed
