Volunteer Opportunity: Youth Classroom Teacher
Make a lasting impact in the lives of local children.
Friends In Deed is seeking a compassionate, dependable Youth Classroom Teacher to lead our children's programming during our weekly Circles Washtenaw County meetings. This volunteer plays an important role in creating a fun, supportive, and engaging environment where children can learn, build relationships, and thrive while their families participate in the Circles program.
Time Commitment
- 3 hours per week
- Tuesdays, 6:00–8:00 PM (on-site)
- Approximately 1 additional hour each week to review lesson plans and materials provided in advance
Responsibilities
- Lead weekly programming for approximately 10 children, ages 7–11
- Facilitate age-appropriate activities, discussions, and lessons using provided curriculum
- Foster a safe, welcoming, and inclusive classroom environment
- Encourage participation, teamwork, and positive social interactions
- Communicate and collaborate with Friends In Deed staff and fellow volunteers
We're Looking For Someone Who Has
Previous experience leading groups of children, such as:
- Teaching
- Camp counseling
- Coaching athletics
- Leading youth groups or extracurricular activities
- Other similar youth leadership experience
Desired Skills
- Strong communication and collaboration
- Group leadership and classroom management
- Adaptability and problem-solving
- Patience
- Empathy and a positive attitude
Preferred (Not Required)
- Experience working with children with special needs
- Knowledge of trauma-informed or trauma-responsive care
